POST-OP INSTRUCTIONS

These are general post op instructions for the following procedures. If you are having symptoms that are not covered here or have a dental emergency, please contact directly at the office.

Try to keep your mouth at rest as much as possible for the next ______ hours and do not eat for the next hour. Have lots of cold ice water, but do not rinse, expectorate or drink through a straw. Talk as little as possible.

To reduce Swelling:

Apply ice (in an ice-bag or wrapped in a towel) to the side of the face where the surgery was performed. Keep the ice in place for 15 minutes then remove for 15 minutes. Continue this today. Ice is not necessary after 24 hours.
Keep your head elevated and sleep on the opposite side of the surgery.

Have a (soft, semi-solid, cold) diet today. Avoid hot foods for two days as the surgical area is more sensitive.

After ______ hours, resume your normal diet, but chew on the side opposite the surgical area.

Do not bite with your front teeth. Do not bite into things like sandwiches, apples, corn on the cob, unless you cut it up first and chew directly with your back teeth.

Use 2-3 200mg (600mg at one time) Advil, Ibuprofen, or other mild analgesic every 4 hours. The prescription pain medication is only helpful for pain.  The prescription meds can be taken as well as the Advil but one must not drive or operate heavy machinery when taking the prescription pain medication.

If swelling occurs, it will be greater the day after tomorrow. The swelling usually reaches its peak about 48 hours after surgery and then gradually diminishes.

To promote healing:

Starting tomorrow use warm salt water mouth soaks. Mix a small teaspoon of salt in a tall glass of warm water. Hold a mouthful over the operated area keeping it on the tissue until it cools off.  Do this 3 times a day, unless there is some bleeding. Continue rinsing until next appointment in 7 to 10 days.

If there is some oozing of blood, do not rinse. Using gauze gently wipe any half-formed blood clots which may have formed. Then place gauze over the area which seems to be bleeding and keep it there with moderate pressure for about 15 to 20 minutes. Repeat a second time.  Do not rinse, expectorarte, or drink through a straw for the day.  If bleeding continues, call this office.

Brush your teeth normally and carry out your regular home care routine except in the area where the surgery was done.

Today/tomorrow use Chlorhexidine/Peridex by dispensing some in a teaspoon take a fresh q-tip to clean/paint the teeth around the surgical area and continue until the next appointment.

If the dressing comes off, do not be concerned.  If you chew where the dressing is, you may break it off.

For surgeries involving the sinus, please do not blow your nose or sneeze with your mouth closed.  If you have a cold please take decongestants or use saline sprays to clear the nose.  A small amount of blood may come from the nose and this is normal.  Do not use weights or do any motion that causes strain or bearing down in the sinus area!

Please take the antibiotics (usually 3 times a day) and follow the instructions on the prescriptions.

If you have any questions, or if there is any problem not covered in these instructions, please do not hesitate to call this office. Our phone is always attended. 914 672 3567 or 914 949 2218.

ROOT CANAL THERAPY

It is best to refrain from eating for at least 2 hours and until the anesthesia has worn off to

prevent possibly injury to your soft tissue. This will also allow the temporary restorative material to harden.

You will most likely feel soreness in the area as well as pressure when you bite down.  For this reason, you should avoid hard and chewy foods. Do not eat on the treated side of your mouth for at least 24 hours.  The soreness should decrease within a week.

Take any antibiotic medication prescribed to you by the doctor as this will eliminate any remaining infection in the tooth.

If you notice any of the following symptoms please contact our office:

- Increasing tenderness or swelling in the area surrounding the tooth

- A reaction to the medication

- Loss of the temporary filling material

-Tooth fracture

CROWNS AND BRIDGES

It is best to refrain from eating for at least 2 hours and until the anesthesia has worn off to

prevent possibly injury to your soft tissue

Temporary: Please be careful when cleaning around the temporary restoration.  Do not pull up on the temporary when flossing this area.  Make sure to brush this area gently and not to chew any hard foods on the restoration.

If your temporary comes off between appointments, please call our office so that we can reapply it for you.

Sensitivity: Sensitivity to hot and cold is to be expected following treatment.

For the first few days, try to avoid extremely hot or cold foods and beverages

It is normal to have discomfort in the gums around the tooth after the anesthesia wears off. If you feel discomfort in the gum tissue, rinse the area with warm salt water.  You can also take an Advil or Tylenol if the discomfort persists.

Permanent Crown/Bridge: When the final restoration is placed, your bite may feel a little different.  This is just your mouth adjusting to the new addition.  If it still feels off in a few days, please call the office for a slight adjustment.

Home Care: It is important to resume regular brushing and flossing immediately.

A consistent daily home care routine will increase the longevity of the restoration.
